Fall Activewear Trends & Must-Haves for 2021

Working out no longer exclusively means hitting the gym. These days, you might be squeezing in Zoomba at the studio, running outside, or spinning in front of a screen in your basement. What hasn’t changed is how important exercise is physically, or how good it makes you feel mentally.

Bare Necessities always has your day-to-day needs top of mind, including the industry’s best sports bras and performance underwear and the workout clothes that go with them.

Buyer Krista Molinaro has sourced the best brands and styles (think Nike, Champion, Under Armour) that let you get your sweat on, from gentle yoga to a sweat-inducing on-demand class—even post-workout activewear and sporty-ish athleisure (which lately also doubles as actual work wear).

Newness is flowing in every day here, so keep checking back in our Activewear department. For the moment, check out some of our fall fitness favorites.

The best basic sports bra:

As the customer reviews make clear, this activewear wardrobe staple is one of our best-selling sports bras, not to mention a great value for the price. It’s wire-free, high-impact, offers comfy compression like a much pricier bra and fits up to a size 42DDD. (For more best-in-class bras tailored to different physiques, see our Top 10 Sports Bras.)

The best workout shorts:

Everything old is new again, and bike shorts—those ’90s staple—are the trending silhouette in activewear right now. They’re supremely functional for a ride or a run, of course, but these days they also translate into a streetwear look for running some errands. Nike’s Dri-FIT technology wicks away sweat to keep you cool while you’re on the move. Basic black is a no-brainer, and bonus points for the phone pocket and the zippered waistband pocket in the waistband for stashing a key or credit card.

The best workout leggings:

Pretty much the quintessential black legging, this must-have pair of pants (yes, they’re totally pants) has moisture-wicking properties and incredible 4-way-stretch for any pose or range of motion you need to achieve. But what we might love most about them is the adaptable high waistband you can pull up or fold down as needed.

The best workout top:

This soft crewneck, racerback tank top with breathable mesh perforations is ideal for yoga and barre or other moderate workouts that don’t have you whipping off your shirt. It’s such a versatile, comfy and stylish layering piece (check out the side-split hem) that you’ll probably be reaching for it on rest days, too. In sizes 8 to 18, this is a good thing everyone can get in on.

The cool-down must have:

After a workout, throw on a shirt that feels light while your body temp comes back down. This one is so good because it comes in so many on-trend color and patterns and is styled with Dolman sleeves and a split hem so as not to scream “I JUST CAME FROM THE GYM!” Its Modal-Spandex blend is supremely stretchy-soft, and who doesn’t love a thumb hole for added comfy-coziness? We won’t tell if it never sees the inside of a fitness studio, either.
