If anyone knows a thing or two about intimacy, it’s the French. From a faint note of Chanel No. 5 you need to get close to detect to a very popular kind of kiss, clearly there’s something in the eau that gives all things French an air of closeness, confidence and charisma.

As the Director of Merchandising and Communications for Chantelle US, one of our favorite brands, Alicia Miller has been at the French lingerie label for 14 years. From partnering with the head office in Paris to developing beautiful, comfortable bras, panties, shapewear and activewear that meets the needs of the American market, Alicia is well versed in what it takes to bring a brand with more than a century of heritage into these fast-paced times.

We got to connect with Alicia this month to discuss all things intimate…and, of course, intimates.

Q: What is intimacy?
A: Intimacy is a sense of closeness, of feeling comfortable and secure enough with your surroundings, with the people around you, to be fully yourself.

Q: What does intimacy mean to you? What does it mean to Chantelle?
A: To me and to the brand, the essence of intimacy is feeling comfortable in your own skin. There is a confidence, an empowerment, that comes from your uniqueness and in your ability to define who you are and want to be. When you feel like you can truly be yourself, you are more open to connecting with the world around you in a meaningful way.

Q: What is the commonality between intimacy and lingerie?
A: The commonality comes from being able to choose—what makes you feel comfortable, what makes you feel confident, what makes you feel secure, what makes you feel sexy? You get to define that. Intimacy and your intimate apparel that can change on any given day, but it's your choice to lean into what feels right in both of those spaces.

Q: What three words embody intimacy to you?
A: Close. Comfortable. Authentic.

"What makes you feel comfortable,
confident, secure, sexy?
You get to define that."

Q: Do you get the sense there’s an absence of intimate connections in the world today? Are people afraid of intimacy?
A: I know there’s this idea of technology creating gaps in interpersonal relationships, but, for me, in a lot of ways it's the opposite. Social media, FaceTime…all of these things allow me to maintain intimate relationships with friends and family all over the world. I’m very thankful for the ability to travel and to experience other cultures, which makes the world feel smaller to me, as if these connections were right around the corner.

Q: What is your most intimate memory?
A: Having both of my boys. Giving birth, of course, is a situation where you have to completely let your guard down and be very vulnerable. And then, on the other side of that, is your new family. You’re meeting this human for the first time even though it feels like you’ve known them forever. Plus, you look at your partner in a completely different way, knowing you did this together. Everything in life kind of just clicks into place in those moments.

Q: If intimacy were a color, what would it be?
A: I think it depends on the day! Today is a cool tone, for sure, because I feel a sense of peace.

Q: If intimacy were a food, what would it be?
A: Anytime I’m sharing food, or even just dining with someone, it feels very intimate. To me, it's less about what we’re eating and more about the shared experience of enjoying a meal together.

Q: What song is intimate to you?
A: Something that makes me want to sing. There is a sense of lowered inhibition when you’re singing that requires a level of comfortability and confidence. Anything by Joni Mitchell always makes me feel very nostalgic, and I can't help but sing along.

Q: When your bra fits, it boosts your confidence. How does this allow for bigger, more intimate connections?
A: When you remove insecurity from a situation, you feel at ease enough to take risks and put yourself out there. The right fit in the right bra can make you feel comfortable as you are, in your own skin, meaning you can more easily show yourself to others. It’s that important. Being yourself allows another person to do the same, so you aren't just connecting; you’re connecting authentically. In the end, it's just more real.
