ECO-CHIC INTIMATES

ECO-CHIC INTIMATES

Greener living happens in ways both big (meeting tougher emissions policies; reducing reliance on fossil fuels) and small—like your bras and underwear.

While the world’s leaders are hopefully tackling the biggest stuff, we still like to make good choices as consumers, whether that’s buying organic at the grocery store or shopping secondhand.

Bare Necessities has more sustainable fashion finds than ever before—not least of which because we’re producing some of it ourselves to fill the gaps our buyers see. So the next time you need to replace panties that have seen better days or buy a bra that supports your boobs as much as it does the planet, you’ve got options in every category from some of our longtime and soon-to-be favorite brands.

SUSTAINABLE SWIMWEAR

Birdsong Swim was built around style, support and sustainability (it’s all made of 87 percent recycled nylon). Almost the full assortment of Sunsets bra-sized swimwear is sustainable, too (86 percent recycled nylon). Swim Systems and Fantasie are getting in on the eco action with select styles in recycled materials, and Becca has been using REPREVE recycled polyester fiber made from water bottles in its swimwear. Keep an eye out for greener swim throughout the season flowing in from Bleu Rod Beattie and Miss Mandalay. Polish off your look with a recycled chiffon coverup from Pour Moi.

SUSTAINABLE SLEEPWEAR

You spend a third of your life asleep, may as well make it kind to Mother Earth. Brands making impressive strides in sleepwear include P.J. Salvage with the REPREVE fiber (the brand has been recognized with Good Health and Well Being, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals), Papinelle with its 100 percent organic cotton, and our own Bare Necessities line, Relax, Recharge, Recycled, which makes loungewear basics even better using 62 percent recycled polyester.

BETTER BRAS

We’re psyched to see more bras than ever that support our boobs and our planet. Panache is taking the charge super seriously and we love to see it: Products are made with recycled yarns from pre-consumer sources (that is to say, excess materials from the production process get recycled into new yarns). Straps, elastic and lace are all made using recycled materials. The Rocha and Serene bras both do their part—as do their matching panties. Reimagined Heritage, the Calvin Klein line of sporty bralettes, is based on recycled stretch cotton blend and/or organic cotton. And our youngest fans can start their bra collections with a BRABAR Tween Bralette, a collection of soft bras knit from sustainable Tencel yarns. BRABAR’s production process is low-waste, WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) and fair-trade certified.

ECO-FRIENDLY PANTIES

Hanky Panky is the OG eco intimates maker: The first sets were made using vintage cotton handkerchiefs. Today, expect to find Eco Rib fabric fashioned from Refibra Tencel Lyocell and organic cotton (to say nothing of their recycled/recyclable packaging and Lingeriecycle program). Saalt leakproof panties are here; they’re sustainable and made from recycled polyester and Tencel Modal, which is made using wood pulp.

Chantelle Cotton Comfort panties are made of soft, ribbed organic cotton that makes them perfect everyday pairs.

And again from our friend Mr. Calvin Klein comes the reimagined Heritage collection, stylishly designed using a recycled stretch cotton blend and/or organic cotton.

GREENER HOSIERY

Even your gams can get into the conservation game. With innovation from Hanes, you can sport EcoSmart Control Top Tights in Seasonless or Opaque weights. Both are made using predominately REPREVE recycled nylon as well as recycled spandex to make tights even Mother Nature could love.
