Shapewear Don'ts (& Do's)

Mistake #1: Buying the wrong size.

I see this a lot, and I get it. Don’t we all wish we could be a certain size, or think we are the size we used to be? But you need to buy the size that is the most flattering for you. Shapewear is only going to help if it fits well. Believe it or not, buying shapewear that is too small will actually make you look bigger! Start with the measurements on the style’s size chart as a guide. If you have to go up a size for the shapewear to lie flat and smooth, go for it -- even if you need to go up two sizes. Finding the right size for you will make you feel better, and it’ll do what it’s intended to: whether to hold you in, or hide cellulite or keep you smooth and line-free!

Mistake #2: One key shapewear piece can do it all.

There are many great basics out there, but there isn’t any one shapewear solution piece for every problem! Follow this simple approach to figure out what you’ve got and what you need. For outfits that require shapewear foundations, set them out on your bed and categorize them. Dresses may call for a shaping slip, a white pant needs a nude colored shaping panty. Fitted sweaters and tops beg for a shaping cami, and so on… just as you have to wear different shoes with different outfits, sometimes you need specialized shaping pieces beneath different silhouettes.

Mistake #3: My underwear should match my outfit.

If you're looking for shapewear that is the most versatile, go nude. Look for a brand that makes a nude shade closest to your skin tone. I love black shapewear, too, but it’s not as versatile. Even if you change your outfit a few times in the morning, you can most likely stick with the same nude shaping piece underneath. If you want shapewear to become part of your outfit, find a piece that doesn't "look" like shapewear. Try a shaping cami with pretty lace detail that will peek out from under your blouse, or a trimmed slip that’s meant to be shown.

Mistake #4: Giving up comfort.

Don't sacrifice comfort - that is key! After all, buying an uncomfortable piece will only make you want to rip it off before lunch. Find that shaping piece you’ll feel confident in and, while still being able to eat and breathe, can wear without discomfort. For a special occasion, opt for that high-compression piece, but for every day, you want lighter-level compression. Even just the lightest bit of shapewear can help make that jersey dress fit and look better.

Mistake #5: Wearing the wrong foundations underneath.

Shapewear hides a lot, but it can't hide the wrong bra and panty. You don't want to layer and ultimately reveal your bra outline, panty edge and then shapewear lines on top of that! Layer each piece thoughtfully. Wear seamless undies, a well-fitted, smoothing bra and then add the perfectly invisible shaping piece. If it all seems like too much to wear at once, it's worth investing in shapewear that does double duty. Buy a shaping cami or bodysuit with a built-in bra or a shaping panty. And now, there are great pieces you can actually wear with your own bra underneath, so try them out.
